Most cars are designed to run on 89 octane or higher, but they're now made with the ability to automatically retard the timing to handle cheaper gas. Premium does give you better gas mileage for a few reasons. First of all it keeps your injectors cleaner, and that alone can make a big difference over time. It also burns more efficiently so you get more bang per gallon. Just like the synthetic oil and air filter topics, don't be confused by the instant gratification of paying a few less bucks per tank. I typically use the mid grade gas and fill up with premium once a month. Premium gas can work in concert with a clean air filter to provide optimal gas mileage. I'm not sure of the exact science, but higher octane fuel works better with more air flow. Combustion is a formula that has to do with the oxygen to fuel ratio, and octane has a lot to do with it.
