Everyone knows A/C drains power from the motor, and costs you in MPG. But who wants to be miserable, and put your kids through the heat just to save a few pennies, no matter how much they add up.
I have found though, that if I run the A/C to cool the car off, then turn it off and keep the air recirculating (the button with two arrows chasing each other) the car stays cool for quite a while. The Evaporator gets ice cold, and is still cold for a long time even when the A/C is shut off. Run it when you need it, and don't when you don't.
Also, tint your windows if legal where you are, you'll reduce the need for A/C also.
So save, and be comfortable doing it.
