I remember hearing somewhere that "topping off" the tank, getting that little extra bit of gasoline after the automatic pump shuts off, wastes a lot of gas, because if the tank really is full, the excess gas ends up on the ground, your clothes, etc.

Don't know that this would make a huge difference, but maybe if everyone stopped doing it, it would help a little...

I used to top off when I paid in cash -- if the pump stopped at 19.52, I'd keep going until $20. Now I used a check card for everything, so I don't have to worry about a pocket full of change.

I have heard that also. I to pay with my debit card. So I don't tend to worry if it stops at a weird amount. I would imagine right about now anything would help.

I usually just wait a couple of seconds before removing the nozzle to be sure those last couple of drop trickle out...LOL.

SageMother- I do that too! lol Glad to know that I am not the only one!

My husband tops off the tank.  I have heard that it doesnt do anything.  But he will stand there forever gently babying the tiniest little bit of the last drop it will take into the tank.  I dont know how effective it is,  but it usually ends up irritating me,  LOL.

My ex used to do this and it would drive me crazy too. (Which was probably part of the reason why she did it, I think. )

I used to top off too, but it was only to "round up" the amount! I was paying with cash, that´s the only reason.  Never thought of it as a waste.

I top off the tank to get a round payment too! And I thought I was one of the only ones who did that! I don't really think of it as a waste. I wonder how much it would really save?

I guess it is also the fact that once you are there, you better get as much as you can so you don't have to fill up too soon... but I think that is all my own psycological stuff, because few drops will not really make a difference!

Well lately I haven't had that problem, because with the prices so high I haven't filled up my van in ages!

I always fill up my tank when I'm at the gas station, but I guess that's because I have a small tank. I can see not ever filling up a van.

I don't top off the tank but what I do is my own little way of getting that extra little bit. When i'm done pumping the amount I can afford to put in,I reach over to where you put the nozzle back and flip the lever, then you squeez the handle and lift up the hose.LOL,try it it works and you would be surprised how much one of those hoses can hold.I fugure at todays prices,I can get an extra dollars worth from some pumps.

i guess it depends on how ya look at it but i would think driving around with a full tank would get you less mpg then driving around with say a half empty one...i think gas weighs about 6 pounds a gallon

I am not really sure if this would save gas or waste gas.  I have heard mixed reports.  I think driving with a full tank of petrol is generally better to increase gas mileage.  It is also better on your car.  I think it can damage your car by driving on empty.

Driving with your tank so empty that sludge is dragged out of the tank isn't going to do your car any good, but you don't need to keep your tank full.

I'd never thought about the weight of a full tank before. Interesting idea!

Right about now I believe I would lay down and drink the gas before I let it hit the ground.

Lol mtrent!

I don't think topping off is going to do any harm at all, providing you don't do it so much that you make it spill over. that would be just plain daft.

I have no scientidic proof or data but this is what I do on a cross country trip. If you top of your tank on a hot day and go a short distance and park the gas will expand and over flow out of your tank. So on a long trip I top off early in the morning when everything is cool, right or wrong I theorize as I drive and the day heats up the gas expands and maybe it streches the fillup. Maybe?????
