I was looking around for other ideas on how to save gas and talking to friends as well. Ok, grumbling with friends about gas prices again... One of them started talking about how he saves on gas. I was kind of shocked but it makes sense. He drives to work each day on one of our major highways here in New Mexico. He says he follows teh big rigs. My first thing was what about the rocks flying out from them but so far nothing has chipped or cracked his window. But the big reason he follows them is for steady flow of traffic. They seem to have a better way of knowing how to keep with a flow of traffic without so many starts and stops. The constant speed keeps him from shifting to much and saves him on gas. Also he has not be picked up by cops for speeding either since he travels with a pack of the trusk who normally have a radar for the cops. I know, an added bonus there but worth it.

This advice about following behind the big trucks makes sense to me. Starting and stopping with the accelerator wastes gas.  They travel the highways all the time with a certain schedule to keep. They are experienced and knowledgeable about transportation.

Don't you get sort of carried along in the slipstream if you get close enough behind a big truck?

Not something I fancy doing.

From what my friend says it works great for him and there is the slipstream behind the truck that works well for him. I have been trying to follow trucks on the highway of late and it seems to work a bit. My stop and go cut down a lot on the higway, it has been great.

Race care drivers will "draft" off cars ahead of them in a race, which cuts their gas usage.  This sounds like the same maneuver.

Hmmm, I think I'll follow really close behind an 18 wheeler at 65 mph so that I'm in his blind spot.  Oh yeah, that's real smart.
